Just one day before the Rhythms of Africa – Kumasi Edition, an unplanned meeting in a radio studio set the stage for one of the concert’s most memorable moments.
Ghanaian gospel musician and worship leader Sonnie Badu was at an FM station in Kumasi when he was introduced to a young, gifted singer, Benedicta Antwi. The introduction was made by veteran gospel musician Victoria Sarfo, who recognised the young singer’s extraordinary potential.
During the brief but impactful encounter, Benedicta confidently rendered several of Sonnie Badu’s songs. Her vocal strength, control and passion immediately caught his attention, leaving a strong impression on the gospel star.
Moved by her performance, Sonnie Badu expressed admiration for her gift and invited her to join him in performing OLORUNFEMI, a worship song originally recorded by Joe Mettle, at his upcoming concert. In that defining moment, he also announced her new stage name, “Benny Star”.
What followed was a rapid but remarkable turn of events. That same night, Benny Star joined Sonnie Badu’s band for rehearsals. Less than 48 hours later, she found herself standing on one of the biggest gospel stages in Ghana.
On Sunday, 21 December at Jubilee Park, Benny Star stepped into the spotlight at the Rhythms of Africa – Kumasi Edition, delivering a powerful live rendition of OLORUNFEMI alongside Sonnie Badu. The performance drew thunderous applause from the audience and quickly became one of the most talked-about highlights of the night.
Videos from the event show Sonnie Badu deliberately stepping aside to allow the young, visually impaired singer to lead the moment, as the crowd responded with cheers, worship and admiration. The performance has since gone viral, earning praise across social media for its message of inclusion, opportunity and faith.
Benny Star’s journey from a radio studio introduction to a grand concert stage within days has resonated with many, serving as a reminder of the power of preparation meeting opportunity.
Her story stands as a powerful testament to talent, grace and timing.
