Nigerian afrobeats sensation Tems has hit a major milestone as her single LOVE ME JEJE has sold over 500,000 units in the United States, making it eligible for an RIAA Gold certification. The song, a standout from her debut album BORN IN THE WILD, has captivated global audiences with its blend of afrobeats and R&B, interpolating Seyi Sodimu’s 1997 classic of the same name.

Tems, who won a Grammy for Best African Music Performance for the track at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards in February 2025, continues to fortify her status as a leading voice in African music. The achievement, reported by Chart Data and celebrated widely, marks another win for the 29-year-old artiste, who has previously collaborated with stars like Beyoncé, Drake, and J. Cole.

LOVE ME JEJE has been a cultural bridge, resonating with both Nigerian and international fans through its nostalgic roots and modern soundscape. Produced by GuiltyBeatz and Spax, the track’s music video, directed by Tems herself, pays homage to her Lagos upbringing, featuring vibrant scenes of her dancing in the streets and singing alongside Sodimu.

The song’s success reflects the growing global influence of afrobeats, a point Tems emphasized during her 2025 MET Gala interview, where she noted that African music extends far beyond the genre’s mainstream perception. This milestone adds to Tems’ impressive streak, following her FOR BROKEN EARS EP also achieving RIAA Gold certification in 2024.

However, the rapid rise of LOVE ME JEJE raises questions about the commercialization of afrobeats and its impact on artistic authenticity. While Tems’ success is undeniable, some critics argue that the genre’s global appeal often pressures artistes to cater to Western markets, potentially diluting cultural roots for broader accessibility.

Tems’ interpolation of Sodimu’s work has sparked debates about proper credit and the ethics of sampling, despite her public acknowledgment of the original artiste. As Tems continues to break barriers, recently joining the ownership group of San Diego FC, she remains a pivotal figure in afrobeats’ evolution, balancing global stardom with her Nigerian heritage, though the tension between commercial success and cultural integrity lingers.
