African boxing reached a defining milestone on December 20, 2025, as the University of Ghana Sports Stadium hosted THE SHOWDOWN. This historic event reaffirmed Ghana’s enduring influence on the global boxing stage.
The event marked the first-ever professional boxing contest staged at the newly inaugurated Legon Sports Stadium. All 18,000 seats were officially sold out, creating an electrifying atmosphere.
Beyond the action in the ring, THE SHOWDOWN doubled as a cultural spectacle. Ghanaian music superstar Shatta Wale delivered a high-energy performance that seamlessly fused sport and entertainment, amplifying the anticipation ahead of the night’s headline bout.
The evening’s centrepiece featured British light heavyweight rivals Craig Richards and Dan Azeez, who travelled to Accra to resolve a long-standing domestic rivalry for the vacant IBF International Light Heavyweight Title.
After an evenly contested, tactical battle spanning eleven intense rounds, Richards produced a decisive finish. Just 23 seconds into the final round, the Londoner, nicknamed “Spider”, connected with a thunderous left hook that dropped Azeez to the canvas, sealing a dramatic 12th-round knockout victory. The win reignites Richards’ world title ambitions and marks a successful African debut for the British contender.
The success of THE SHOWDOWN represents a significant proof of concept for international promoters eyeing Africa as a major boxing destination. Sharaf Mahama, founder of Legacy Rise Sports, emphasised that the overwhelming turnout underscored Accra’s unmatched appetite for world-class boxing.
