Thousands Gather at Independence Square to Honour Daddy Lumba in Candlelight Vigil

On the evening of August 2nd, 2025, Accra’s Independence Square became a sea of flickering lights, music, and deep emotion as thousands of Ghanaians came together to celebrate the life and legacy of Charles Kwadwo Fosu, better known as Daddy Lumba.

The candlelight vigil was more than a tribute, it was a powerful moment of unity. Fans, family, musicians, and public figures filled the square, dressed in black and holding candles that lit up the night in honour of a man whose music had been the soundtrack of Ghanaian life for decades.

As classic Lumba hits like Aben Wo Ha and Theresa echoed through the speakers, the crowd swayed, sang along, and let their emotions flow freely. Some smiled through their tears, while others danced slowly, clearly moved by the music and the memory of the man behind it.

At times, strong winds blew across the square, snuffing out candles but mourners didn’t let that dim the moment. They switched on their phone flashlights, determined to keep the light going, both literally and symbolically. It was a beautiful act of collective love and resilience.

Throughout the night, friends, musicians, and fans took the mic to share their memories and pay tribute. Many spoke of how Daddy Lumba shaped not just a genre, but an entire generation of artists. Others shared personal stories — how his songs helped them through heartbreaks, brought joy during celebrations, or simply made ordinary moments feel special.

One of the most powerful moments came when a group of young singers led the crowd in a soulful version of Yentie Obiaa. Thousands joined in, voices rising in harmony. It felt like a final sendoff, filled with strength, pride, and gratitude.

Daddy Lumba passed away on July 26th, 2025, after a long illness, but he left behind a monumental legacy over 30 albums and more than 200 songs. His voice, his lyrics, and his spirit continue to live on in homes, cars, weddings, and street corners across the country.

That night at Independence Square wasn’t just a goodbye. It was a promise that the man, the legend, the music will never be forgotten.

Because legends like Daddy Lumba don’t really die. They live forever in the stories we tell, the songs we sing, and the hearts they touched.
