Uncle Waffles, the Swazi-born Amapiano DJ and producer, has made history by becoming the first female artiste to grace the cover of Rolling Stone Africa. This milestone not only highlights her personal achievements but also signifies a significant moment for the Amapiano and Afro House music communities.
Her journey to prominence began during South Africa’s COVID-19 lockdowns, where she dedicated herself to mastering DJing. A viral video of her dancing to Young Stunna’s “Adiwele” during a set caught the attention of international audiences, including global superstar Drake, who publicly endorsed her talent.
Since then, Uncle Waffles has released successful projects like her debut EP, Red Dragon (2022), featuring the quadruple-platinum single Tanzania, and her album Asylum (2023), which blends hip-hop elements with her signature Amapiano sound. Her dynamic performances and unique style have solidified her status as a leading figure in African music.
Rolling Stone Africa, launched in August 2024, aims to celebrate African music, culture, and stories. Featuring Uncle Waffles on its cover underscores the magazine’s commitment to highlighting influential African artists who resonate with the continent’s youth and global audiences.
This cover feature delves into Uncle Waffles’ remarkable rise, exploring how she transformed from a self-taught DJ into an international sensation, embodying resilience and self-determination.
