Anas Aremeyaw Anas Wins $18 Million Defamation Lawsuit Against Kennedy Agyapong in U.S. Court

Investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas has secured an $18 million judgment in a defamation lawsuit against former Ghanaian Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong. The Essex County Superior Court in New Jersey delivered the verdict, marking a significant legal victory for Anas.

The lawsuit originated from statements made by Agyapong during a 2021 interview on “The Daddy Fred Show,” an online program popular among Ghanaian audiences in the United States. Anas alleged that Agyapong made several damaging and false claims, including accusations of criminal behavior and involvement in the 2019 murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale, a key member of Anas’s team.

In response to the verdict, Anas expressed his satisfaction, describing it as “a victory for democracy and truth.” He emphasized that the judgment serves as a reminder of the need to uphold integrity and accountability in public communications.

This ruling contrasts with a previous defamation suit filed by Anas against Agyapong in Ghana, which was dismissed by an Accra High Court in 2023. The differing outcomes in separate jurisdictions highlight the complexities involved in defamation cases and the varying legal standards applied.

The $18 million award reflects the court’s recognition of the damage caused to Anas’s reputation and serves as a deterrent against unfounded defamatory statements. The case underscores the critical role of the judiciary in protecting individuals’ reputations and maintaining the integrity of public discourse.
