Lionel Messi Becomes World Cup All-Time Top Scorer

Captain of Argentina and Inter Miami forward, Lionel Messi has cemented his place in football history by becoming the FIFA World Cup's all-time top scorer.

The 38-year-old scored two goals to increase his World Cup total to 18 goals during Argentina's Group-stage match against Austria on Monday.

Messi has now surpassed former Germany striker Miroslav Klose, who had held the record since the 2014 FIFA World Cup, despite missing an early penalty.

Messi tied the score with Klose after scoring a hat-trick in Argentina's thrilling 3-0 victory over Algeria in their first group game. 

 He is now the only player at the top of the World Cup scoring charts thanks to his most recent goal.

The Argentine football legend is about to achieve yet another momentous feat. 

Messi needs just one more assist to surpass Argentine icon Diego Maradona as the tournament's all-time top assist provider. He currently has eight World Cup assists.
