An Accra High Court has granted bail to social media blogger and Shatta Movement supporter Abdul Gafaru Sani, popularly known as Webkid or WebkidAfrika, after more than six weeks in custody over allegations of publishing false information about dancehall artiste Stonebwoy and his family.
The court granted him bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 with two sureties on Monday, bringing to an end his detention since his arrest on 7 May.
Webkid is facing charges relating to the alleged publication of false news and offensive online content targeting Stonebwoy and members of his family.
According to reports, the charges against him were later expanded from four counts to six.
The case has attracted significant public attention, partly because of the involvement of dancehall artiste Shatta Wale, who appeared at the court in solidarity with his supporter.
Videos circulating on social media showed some of the musician’s supporters gathering at the court premises, chanting songs and slogans in support of Webkid.
Court proceedings in the matter had suffered a setback last week after the scheduled hearing could not proceed because of the absence of the presiding judge.
The case was subsequently adjourned to Monday, when the court granted bail.
According to court documents, prosecutors allege that Webkid published false and misleading content online concerning Stonebwoy and his family. He is also accused of engaging in conduct considered capable of causing a breach of the peace.
