Dr. Chris Aminarh Advocates for Early Sickle Cell Testing in Relationships
Dr Chris Aminarh

On 3Music TV’s Culture Daily, Dr. Chris Aminarh delivered a compelling call for early sickle cell testing in relationships, aligning his message with the significance of World Sickle Cell Day on June 19. He emphasized that understanding one’s genotype—whether AA (normal), AS (carrier), or SS (full sickle cell disease)—is a critical step for couples, especially in 2025 when relationships and family planning are central to many young adults’ aspirations. Dr. Aminarh stressed that disclosing sickle cell status at the onset of a relationship, ideally during the “talking stage,” prevents the heartbreak of discovering genetic incompatibilities after deep emotional investment. He noted that waiting until later stages, such as during pre-marital counseling mandated by some churches, can lead to painful decisions if test results reveal high risks, particularly when both partners are AS, carrying a 25% chance of having a child with SS.
Dr. Aminarh highlighted the emotional and psychological toll on individuals living with sickle cell disease, who often face rejection due to societal fear and misunderstanding of their condition. He described the challenges these “warriors” endure, including frequent pain crises, fatigue, and compromised immunity, which can strain relationships and require partners to act as primary caregivers. He urged empathy, encouraging potential partners to educate themselves about the condition rather than shying away out of fear. Dr. Aminarh pointed out that the stigma surrounding sickle cell can lead to isolation, as patients may hesitate to disclose their status, fearing it will deter romantic prospects. He advocated for open conversations to normalize these discussions, ensuring that individuals with sickle cell are not excluded from meaningful relationships due to lack of awareness or support.
To support informed decision-making, Dr. Aminarh recommended that couples undergo genotype testing early to assess compatibility, particularly for those planning to marry and have children. He explained that pairing an SS individual with an AA partner reduces the risk of passing the disease to offspring, while AS-AS unions pose significant risks. Beyond genetics, he underscored the importance of understanding the lifelong commitment involved in caring for a partner with sickle cell, including managing their health crises and potential financial burdens from frequent hospitalizations. Dr. Aminarh’s advocacy extends to broader societal awareness, urging healthcare providers and communities to facilitate access to testing and counseling. His message serves as a clarion call for proactive health conversations, ensuring that love and empathy guide decisions in relationships impacted by sickle cell disease.
