On 3Music TV’s Big Conversation, Midwife Adzo and Dr. Chris Aminarh tackled the severe consequences of unsafe abortions among teenagers, especially when they resort to unverified home remedies due to stigma, misinformation, or lack of resources.
Dr. Aminarh highlighted that these home methods are especially risky once a pregnancy reaches the second trimester, where the fetus has developed considerably, and termination procedures require higher medical precision. Attempting abortions at this stage without proper medical supervision increases the risks of severe health issues, including retained fetal tissue, infections, and hemorrhaging, which can lead to long-term reproductive complications or even death.
Dr. Aminarh emphasized the necessity of professional care to safely conduct termination procedures. Medical facilities offer structured protocols, such as vacuum aspirations or medically managed options, to safely remove fetal tissue without causing harm to the patient. Without such precautions, the risk of complications, particularly from using dangerous substances or unproven methods, is significantly higher. Unfortunately, these young women often avoid seeking help in licensed facilities due to societal stigma, fear of judgment, or the financial burden of medical procedures, pushing them toward unsafe alternatives.
Midwife Adzo expanded on this, explaining that comprehensive sexual and reproductive health education could play a pivotal role in preventing such situations by empowering teenagers with accurate information on pregnancy, contraception, and their reproductive rights. When young people understand the risks associated with unsafe abortions and the options available for safe, professional care, they are better equipped to make informed decisions in the face of unplanned pregnancies.
Their discussion underscored the importance of creating accessible, judgment-free health services for teenagers, which could prevent the harmful outcomes often seen with unsafe abortion practices. Improved access to counseling and nonjudgmental healthcare settings can help teenagers navigate difficult decisions without resorting to dangerous measures, ultimately protecting their health and future reproductive options.
