In a major push to bridge the digital divide, Elon Musk’s SpaceX has announced plans to invest R500 million in providing free high-speed internet to 5,000 rural schools across South Africa. The initiative is expected to benefit approximately 2.4 million students, significantly enhancing access to online learning resources.

The project forms part of SpaceX’s broader strategy to secure regulatory approval for its satellite internet service, Starlink, to operate within South Africa. Currently unavailable in the country, Starlink aims to offer fast and reliable internet connectivity, particularly in underserved and remote areas.

To advance this goal, SpaceX is backing a new South African government policy that allows international tech companies to contribute to national development projects in lieu of meeting local ownership requirements mandated by the country’s Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) laws. If approved, the policy could pave the way for greater foreign investment in critical infrastructure without requiring the surrender of equity.

As part of the plan, SpaceX will partner with local South African companies to handle the installation and maintenance of internet services in the selected schools. This collaboration aligns with the government’s ongoing efforts to expand digital access and equip more communities with the tools needed for education and economic growth.

Government officials have welcomed the proposal, citing the potential impact on education, job creation, and the digital economy. The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies is currently reviewing the proposal, with a decision expected in the coming months.
