FIFA paid a heartfelt tribute to Ghanaian football legend Wilberforce Mfum and devoted Asante Kotoko fan Francis “Nana Pooley” Frimpong during the 75th FIFA Congress in Asunción, Paraguay, with a solemn minute of silence. Mfum, a Black Stars striker who made 26 appearances and scored 20 goals for Ghana, was celebrated for his remarkable contributions to the sport, including his role in Ghana’s 1963 and 1965 Africa Cup of Nations triumphs. 

Nana Pooley, a passionate supporter known for his unwavering loyalty to Asante Kotoko, was equally honored for his off-field impact, galvanizing fans and leaving a lasting legacy in Ghanaian football culture.

Mfum’s legacy as one of Ghana’s greatest footballers was underscored by his record-breaking goal tally, a mark that remains unmatched in the nation’s football history. His dynamic presence on the pitch helped elevate Ghana’s status in African football during its formative years. 

Similarly, Nana Pooley’s infectious enthusiasm and dedication to Asante Kotoko earned him recognition as a cultural icon, with his influence felt beyond the stands, notably during Kotoko’s 2-0 victory over Legon Cities in March 2025, dedicated to his memory. The global football community, through FIFA’s gesture, acknowledged their profound contributions to the sport’s spirit and heritage.

The minute of silence resonated deeply with fans, as reflected in posts, where Ghanaians expressed pride and gratitude for FIFA’s recognition of these two figures. The tribute, observed alongside other football luminaries who passed since the last Congress, highlighted FIFA’s commitment to honoring both players and supporters who shape the game’s global tapestry.
