Ghana Launches Chip-Embedded Passports with Enhanced Security and Service Reforms

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has officially launched Ghana’s new chip-embedded passports, marking a significant upgrade in the nation’s travel documentation system. This initiative introduces advanced security features and comprehensive service reforms aimed at improving efficiency and user experience.

The newly introduced passports incorporate 175 security features, a substantial increase from the 32 features in the previous biometric versions. These enhancements include a microchip that securely stores biometric and photographic data, advanced anti-fraud elements, and nanotechnology in the protective overlays. The design also showcases Ghana’s rich cultural heritage through Adinkra symbols representing freedom, independence, democracy, and cooperation.

As part of the reforms, the Ministry has implemented a 24-hour passport processing service, aiming to deliver passports within 15 working days, with expedited services available in just five days. To ensure accountability, passport officials who fail to meet these timelines will face sanctions.

Additionally, applicants will not incur extra charges for the courier delivery of their passports. Ghana Post has been designated as the primary courier service provider, facilitating nationwide delivery and pickup options for those without fixed addresses.

The new passports are integrated with the National Identification Authority’s database, streamlining applicant verification and enhancing security.

The government has announced a proposed 30% reduction in passport application fees, lowering the cost from GHS500 to GHS350. However, this reduction is pending parliamentary approval and will take effect once the necessary legislative amendments are made.

This transition aligns with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) directive that all member countries adopt electronic passports by 2030. Current biometric passports will remain valid until then, allowing citizens ample time to transition to the new system.

These comprehensive reforms signify Ghana’s commitment to enhancing the security and efficiency of its passport services, ensuring compliance with international standards while improving the user experience for its citizens.
