Ghana Signs AI Education Partnership With Google

The Ministry of Education has signed a new agreement with Google for Education to expand digital learning and the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in classrooms as government pushes to modernise the country’s education system.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu and Google for Education’s Global Managing Director, Kelvin Kells.

According to the Education Minister, the partnership is expected to improve classroom teaching, strengthen digital literacy, enhance teacher training, and equip students with skills needed for a technology-driven economy.

“The partnership will support innovation in teaching and learning, strengthen digital literacy, enhance teacher capacity, and equip Ghanaian students with the critical skills needed for the future of work in an increasingly technology-driven world,” he. Iddrisu said.

The minister said the collaboration forms part of government efforts to modernise Ghana’s education system and prepare students for the changing digital landscape.

The initiative is also expected to give students and teachers greater access to digital learning tools while positioning Ghana among African countries adopting AI-powered education reforms.

The agreement follows earlier discussions between the Ministry of Education and Google on expanding AI-based learning tools in Ghanaian local languages, including Twi, Ewe, and Dagbani.

The Minister had previously stated that Google was working with the University of Ghana and GDI Hub on speech recognition and AI-powered educational tools aimed at improving accessibility and inclusivity in education.

He also noted earlier this year that some of the AI applications being introduced in schools were designed using Ghana’s national curriculum materials to support lesson preparation, assessments, and classroom delivery.

This new agreement signals a growing collaboration between Ghana and global technology firms as the government pushes for wider digital transformation within the education sector.
