The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has petitioned the diplomatic community in Ghana over what it describes as growing political persecution, suppression of dissent and threats to democratic governance under the administration of President John Dramani Mahama.
In the petition presented on Tuesday, the NPP accused the government of using state institutions to intimidate opposition figures, activists and critics through arrests, prosecutions and what it called politically motivated actions.
The party called on diplomats, development partners and international human rights organisations to closely monitor developments in Ghana and help safeguard democratic principles and civil liberties.
According to the petition, the NPP wants the diplomatic community to publicly reaffirm the importance of freedom of expression, judicial independence, due process and political pluralism in Ghana’s constitutional democracy.
The party further appealed for an end to what it described as “politically motivated arrests, prosecutions, arbitrary detentions and intimidation” targeting opposition members, journalists and dissenting voices.
The move comes amid heightened political tensions following recent legal and political controversies involving some opposition figures, including NPP Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC.
Speaking during the party’s visit to the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, NPP National Youth Organiser Salam Mustapha warned that continued harassment of party supporters could trigger stronger reactions from the opposition.
“If this nonsense doesn’t stop, we will weaponize our support base and make this country extremely ungovernable for them,” he said.
The NPP also urged state institutions, particularly the judiciary and security services, to operate independently and without partisan influence. The party said Ghana’s democratic reputation had historically benefited from the vigilance of both local and international stakeholders.
