A court in Nigeria has sentenced an X user to 2 years in prison for posting false and malicious tweet about the daughter of Afrobeats couple Adekunle Gold and Simi.
The convict was arrested after a post he made on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) claiming the couple's daughter, Deja had passed away.
The post quickly went viral within hours, leaving many in confusion and distress.
The claim was, however, immediately debunked by the family and concerning fans.
The user was subsequently picked up by police and charged under the cybercrime and anti-defamation laws of Nigeria.
He pleaded guilty in court for charges of spreading false information and convicted of cyberbullying and defamation.
The ruling judge handed him a two-year custodial sentence, sparking the seriousness of spreading false information on social media.
