Some Ghanaians insist that the girl child continues to receive more attention from society at the expense of the boy child, as conversations around the development and well-being of boys remain limited.
Their concerns come after many admitted they had no knowledge of the International Day of the Boy Child, marked on May 16 each year to promote the well-being, growth, and positive development of boys.
This year’s celebration, observed on Saturday, was held on the theme: Flourish and Thrive: Investing in Boys for Stronger Families and Communities.
Speaking to 3Music TV in separate interviews, some residents in Abelemkpe and Abofu in Achimota admitted that they only became aware of the observance when they were asked about it.
Others argued that although society has made significant efforts to empower the girl child over the years, similar attention is not always given to challenges facing boys.
Some residents stressed the importance of proper parenting in shaping the lives of boys, saying values such as discipline, responsibility, and respect must be taught from an early age.
Others also highlighted the importance of father figures in the upbringing of boys, insisting that the presence of a responsible father or male guardian can play a key role in the emotional and moral development of a child.
On conversations that should be had with boys while growing up, some residents said boys must be taught how to manage their emotions and understand that it is acceptable to express their feelings.
According to them, society often expects boys to hide their emotions, which can negatively affect them as they grow.
Others also called for more open discussions with boys on responsibility, respect for women, peer pressure, and decision-making.
The International Day of the Boy Child is observed annually to raise awareness about issues affecting boys and to encourage society to invest in their development and well-being.
