U.S. Imposes Travel Restrictions As Ebola Outbreak Spreads In Parts Of Africa

The United States has announced temporary travel restrictions and enhanced screening measures for travellers linked to Ebola-affected countries in Africa.

This follows a growing outbreak in parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda and South Sudan.

The measures, announced by the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), include a 30-day suspension of entry for some foreign nationals who have recently been in the affected countries.

U.S. citizens and certain exempt travellers will still be allowed entry but will face stricter health screening and monitoring procedures.

According to U.S. health authorities, the restrictions were introduced after concerns over the spread of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, a rare strain for which there is currently no approved vaccine or targeted treatment.

The outbreak has already caused more than 100 deaths in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with hundreds of suspected infections reported.

Health officials say the disease has also spread into Uganda, increasing fears of wider regional transmission.

The CDC said the immediate risk to the American public remains low, but authorities are taking precautionary measures due to Ebola’s incubation period, which can last up to 21 days.

Travellers arriving from the affected countries will face additional airport screening, monitoring, and possible quarantine requirements.

The latest developments follow confirmation that an American doctor working in Congo tested positive for Ebola and was evacuated for treatment.

Six other Americans believed to have been exposed are also under medical monitoring.

The World Health Organization has since declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, citing the rapid spread of infections and challenges in containing the virus in affected communities.

Africa CDC has, however, urged against broad restrictions targeting African countries, warning that such measures could disrupt trade, humanitarian operations, and regional response efforts.

The agency called for stronger international cooperation, surveillance, and public health support instead of blanket travel barriers.

Ebola is a severe viral disease spread through direct contact with infected bodily fluids. Symptoms include fever, weakness, vomiting, diarrhoea, and, in severe cases, internal and external bleeding.

Health experts say early detection and isolation remain critical in preventing wider outbreaks.
