Government has announced a support package for Ghanaians being evacuated from South Africa following renewed xenophobic attacks targeting some foreign nationals.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the package will include temporary accommodation, psychosocial support, medical assistance, and reintegration measures for affected Ghanaians returning home.
The announcement follows reports of attacks, threats, and destruction of businesses belonging to foreign nationals in parts of South Africa, forcing some Ghanaians to seek evacuation assistance from Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria.
The government said arrangements are being made in collaboration with Ghana’s diplomatic missions and relevant state agencies to ensure the safe return of affected citizens, with the first batch to be evacuated through a special chartered flight scheduled for Thursday, May 21.
The government also indicated that emergency hotlines and consular support services have been activated for Ghanaians still living in affected areas.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said government remains committed to protecting the welfare and safety of Ghanaians abroad and is closely monitoring developments in South Africa.
