Ground Up Chale Lawyer Speaks Out On Commissioned Visual Assets In Kwesi Arthur Conflict
JONATHAN AMABLE, ESQ
The ongoing dispute between Ghanaian rapper Kwesi Arthur and his former record label, Ground Up Chale, has taken a sharper focus on the ownership of commissioned visual materials. According to legal representatives from Ground Up Chale, the issue specifically revolves around photos, promotional materials and other visual assets that the label paid to create.

JONATHAN AMABLE, ESQ, a lawyer representing Ground Up Chale, emphasized that these materials were commissioned by the label, meaning they were paid for and produced under the label’s direction. The contention arises over the rights and usage of these assets, with Ground Up Chale asserting that they hold ownership due to their investment in their creation.

Kwesi Arthur has publicly claimed that he is being unfairly asked to pay $150,000 for using images of himself from projects produced during his time with the label. Fans of the rapper have rallied behind him, launching the #FreeKwesiArthur movement on social media.

The dispute highlights a common tension in the music industry, the ownership and control of visual and promotional content, especially when artistes and labels part ways.

As the situation develops, all eyes are on the negotiations and potential legal proceedings between Kwesi Arthur and Ground Up Chale, with the outcome likely to set an important precedent for artiste-label relationships in Ghana.
