Ghanaian songstress Gyakie, recently sat down for an interview with the Culture Squad on 3Music Tv's Big Conversation. While there, she discussed her creative process, the challenges of being a celebrity, and the inspiration behind her hit song RENT FREE.
Gyakie revealed that she is a very personal songwriter, often drawing inspiration from her everyday experiences and conversations. She also keeps a list of random words and phrases that she might use in future songs. This unique approach to songwriting is evident in RENT FREE, which was inspired by the common phrase "rent free" used to describe someone who can't get another person out of their head.
The song's catchy chorus, "You are living inside my head rent free, baby," was a product of collaboration with producer Afroelectra. Before that, she had never used the phrase rent free in a song before, but she felt it perfectly captured the feeling of being obsessed with someone. The song's success rubberstamps Gyakie's ability to take everyday experiences and transform them into relatable music.
