Historic Total Solar Eclipse to Sweep Across North Africa, Southern Europe, and the Middle East

Historic Total Solar Eclipse to Sweep Across North Africa, Southern Europe, and the Middle East
Total Eclipse
The longest land-visible eclipse in over a century promises a breathtaking celestial spectacle.

A rare astronomical event will plunge parts of the Earth into daytime darkness on August 2nd 2027, as a total solar eclipse, dubbed the Great North African Eclipse, sweeps across parts of Southern Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.

This eclipse is no ordinary sky show. Lasting up to six minutes and 23 seconds, it will be the longest total solar eclipse visible from land between the years 1991 and 2114, making it a true once-in-a-century phenomenon.

The path of totality, where the moon will completely obscure the sun will stretch across southern Spain, travel over Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and extend into Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen, before crossing the Arabian Sea. Cities like Seville, Tripoli, Luxor, and parts of Mecca are expected to witness the event in its full dramatic glory.

Astronomers and eclipse chasers from around the globe are already making plans to travel to prime viewing spots. With clear skies typical of desert regions and coastal cities in summer, North Africa is expected to offer some of the best vantage points.

“This will be one of the most spectacular solar eclipses of our lifetimes,” said Dr. Leila Hamadi, a solar physicist based in Tunisia. “The duration and visibility from historically and culturally rich regions make it a rare blend of science, wonder, and human experience.”

The last time an eclipse of this magnitude touched land for this long was in 1991, over the Pacific and parts of Mexico. The next such opportunity won’t arrive until 2114, highlighting the uniqueness of the 2027 event.

Observers in the path of totality will experience a sudden drop in temperature, the eerie disappearance of shadows, and the chance to see the solar corona— the sun’s outer atmosphere—shimmering in the darkened sky.

Local authorities across several countries are preparing for a possible influx of tourists and scientists. Public awareness campaigns are also being launched to encourage safe viewing practices, including the use of certified solar eclipse glasses to avoid eye damage.

Whether you’re a seasoned astronomer or a curious sky gazer, the Great North African Eclipse is set to be a moment where science meets awe—an unmissable spectacle that will unite millions under one fleeting shadow.
