Tramell Tillman Makes Emmy History, Becomes First Black Man to Win Supporting Actor in a Drama

In a landmark moment at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards on September 14, 2025, Tramell Tillman made history by becoming the first Black man to win the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

Tillman won for his portrayal of Seth Milchick in Apple TV+’s Severance, a role that became central in the show’s second season as it further explored issues of memory, identity, and racial awareness within the sinister corporate world of Lumon Industries.

Facing stiff competition, Tillman’s rivals in the category included several of his own Severance co-stars (Zach Cherry and John Turturro), plus actors from The White Lotus and Paradise.

During his acceptance speech, Tillman paid tribute to those who paved the way before him, citing influential Black actors like Andre Braugher and Michael K. Williams. He also gave heartfelt thanks to his mother, calling her his first acting coach, and saying, “Mama, you were there for me when no one else was, and no one else would show up.”

Tillman, 40 years old, revealed that he initially pursued a pre-med track before embracing acting—an early ambition discouraged by others who felt acting “leads to a dead end.” He credited his undergraduate years at Xavier University as a time when seeing classmates pursuing their passions helped him decide to follow his own.

His win came as part of a strong night for Severance, which led all shows this year with 27 nominations and took home a total of eight Emmy wins.
