Ga, a dialect spoken in Ghana, is frequently thought to have a violent tone.
Pascal
Aka, a film director, is changing this narrative. In an interview on 3Music TV’s
Culture Daily, he said despite not being his original idea, the decision to
have the language predominant in the film GOLD
COAST LOUNGE was to give the language a romantic touch even though the movie
is based on violence.
“I wanted Ga to be used in a romantic way. It wasn’t
my idea. It was the idea of the lead actor, shout-out to Alphonse Menyo. Originally,
I wanted it in Twi but then he used classical Ga language. So he translated a lot
of my scripts into words in Ga that are not so brutal. A word like gbele he won’t use that. He will switch
it up to another word that’s a bit more smooth. I just felt it's beautiful.”
The
veteran music video director also claims that he has stepped away from
directing music videos because he feels the film industry needs him more.
“When
I came into the music industry as a music video director, I felt like I was
needed and it was not really that established. So it was just a few of us. Now all
the young people are doing amazing. They are blowing up. I want to be my own
boss again. The film industry I felt I’m needed there.”
GOLD COAST LOUNGE is
an Afro-noir film that took place in the capital of Ghana. It tells the story
of a criminal family that had to straighten itself out before the government
closed down their private lounge.
