Award-winning rapper Joey B says he has remained an independent artist since 2013, attributing his longevity in the music industry to financial discipline and staying true to himself.
According to him, he has never been signed to a traditional record label despite spending more than a decade as one of Ghana’s most recognisable music acts.
“I’ve been independent since 2013,” he said.
The rapper explained that careful investing and saving have helped him maintain his career without relying heavily on industry structures.
“I just happen to know how to invest and save,” he added.
Joey B’s comments came as he discussed his newly released project, Sexy High Life on Culture Daily on 3Music Tv and Pluzz 89.9 FM where he described the project as a body of work inspired partly by musical influences from New York.
He revealed that representatives from music distribution company Virgin Music Group encouraged him to release a larger project after hearing some of his recent music.
The rapper said he initially had little interest in putting together an extended release but eventually agreed after persistent encouragement.
Beyond the project itself, Joey B advised emerging musicians to focus on authenticity rather than chasing trends.
“Do you,” he said, urging artists to make music they genuinely enjoy rather than trying to satisfy external expectations.
The rapper also suggested that talent alone is not enough for a lasting career, pointing instead to a combination of hard work, faith and grace.
Despite his long career, Joey B indicated that he remains uncertain about staging a major solo concert, saying it is something supporters continue to request.
For now, however, he appears focused on promoting Sexy High Life while continuing the independent path that has defined much of his career.
