Ghanaian musician Joey B has disclosed that a serious struggle with asthma contributed to a period of reduced public activity during his career.
The rapper who was speaking on Culture Daily on 3Music TV and Pluzz 89.9FM said he was unaware that he had asthma and initially mistook the symptoms for other health conditions.
“I didn’t know I had asthma,” he said, explaining that he often felt unusually weak and struggled to breathe, especially while performing on stage.
According to Joey B, a doctor eventually identified the condition around 2019–2020, helping him understand the cause of recurring breathing difficulties that had affected both his health and work.
He said the diagnosis forced him to make significant lifestyle changes, including spending less time in music studios where environmental conditions appeared to trigger his symptoms.
“What was triggering it was studios,” he said, noting that he frequently slept in recording spaces while working on music.
The rapper acknowledged that the situation led him to step back from public life for a period, but stressed that quitting music was never an option.
“It made me take care of myself properly. I just needed my strength back,” he said.
During the period, Joey B became less visible on social media, television and radio, prompting speculation among some fans about his future in music.
Despite the absence, he said his faith helped him remain confident that he would eventually return to active music-making.
The artist has since resumed releasing music and recently unveiled his latest project, Sexy High Life.
