Ghana held its 2024 general elections on December 7, 2024, one of the most fiercely contested political events in the history of the Nation’s 4th Republic. At the climax of what can be referred to as a high-stakes race, The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) John Dramani Mahama emerged victorious in the Presidential contest, defeating the New Patriotic Party’s, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. The results mark the return of the NDC’s John Dramani Mahama to the seat following 2 attempts to regain power.

Although the Electoral Commission of Ghana is yet to announce the official results, reports coming from the camps of both parties and several others suggest that former President John Dramani Mahama is the leading charge. Accentuating the reports is a nation’s address by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia conceding defeat and congratulating President-elect John Dramani Mahama. He went on in the video to pledge his support to the President-elect for a peaceful transition of power to safeguard the democratic integrity of Ghana.

Equally eventful was the parliamentary elections which saw several high-profile Members of Parliament lose their seats. The shifts according to several observers and professionals within the political community suggest the dynamic nature of Ghanaian politics and the desire of the people for change within the country at large and certain constituencies. Amongst some of the MP’s who lost their seats is Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Deputy Majority Leader, who surprisingly lost the Effutu seat he had held for multiple terms. Similarly, Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, a prominent NPP figure, lost her Ablekuma West seat to Rev. Kweku Addo.

Hon. Kwame Governs Agbodza, the Minority Chief Whip and a member of the NDC was re-elected with an increased majority in Adaklu, while Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings solidified her hold on Klottey-Korle constituency.

The election period was marked by both tension and anticipation. Campaigns were characterized by massive rallies, with each party rallying supporters to secure decisive wins. The pre-election period witnessed heated debates over voter roll updates and the credibility of the Electoral Commission (EC). These issues were addressed, however, as the EC reaffirmed its commitment to holding free and fair elections.

Post-election, the atmosphere was one of cautious optimism. Celebrations erupted in NDC strongholds following John Dramani Mahama’s victory, while the NPP urged supporters to remain calm despite the loss.

The elections underscored the resilience of Ghana’s democratic framework, highlighting the maturity of Ghana’s political culture.

Ghanaians now await the official swearing-in of President-elect John Dramani Mahama while attention now turns to how his administration will address the nation’s pressing socio-economic issues and more.
