Nigerian singer-songwriter and producer, Kemuel, is back in Ghana and this time, it’s more than just a visit. On Unpackin’, the soulful creative opened up about growth, genre fusion and why Afrobeats going global shouldn’t scare anyone.
“This is my second time in Ghana,” he shared warmly, recalling the love, peace and community spirit that drew him back. Beyond the hospitality and good food, Kemuel says this trip is about connection and collaboration especially with Ghanaian artiste Rcee, with whom he began working during his last visit.
While many know Kemuel for his Afro-fusion sound, he describes soul as his foundation.
“Soul is just yourself as a person,” he explained. “It’s your personality shining through your music.”
Though his sound blends R&B, Afropop, highlife, and even folk elements, he insists everything rests on feeling first. For Kemuel, music is less about catchy lyrics and more about emotional impact.
“You only come back to a song that made you feel something.”
That philosophy shaped his seven-track EP CLOUDS, a project that leaned heavily into pop influences while maintaining his soulful essence. Tracks like POLO and FOCUS became fan favourites months after release proof that timeless music outlives hype.
His latest single, OVAH (stylised intentionally), is a bold fusion of Pop, Folk, R&B and Highlife entirely self-produced. The spelling, he admits, is simply creative freedom in action.
“It’s spelt that way because I can,” he laughed.
After spending much of last year strategising, Kemuel says 2026 will be filled with releases, more singles, possibly a project and collaborations. He hinted at interest in working with Ghanaian stars like Amaarae and Melissa, if the opportunity arises.
“I don’t like putting out music I won’t be proud of in ten years,” he said. “So I take my time.”
