Rapper Sean Kingston, born Kisean
Paul Anderson, has been taken into federal custody in Miami after failing to
secure a $100,000 cash bond required to remain on house arrest pending
sentencing for a federal wire fraud conviction. The 35-year-old BEAUTIFUL GIRLS
artiste, along with his mother, Janice Turner, was found guilty last month of
orchestrating a $1 million fraud scheme involving luxury goods, including
jewelry, a Cadillac Escalade, and a 232-inch LED TV.
According to HipHopDX and NBC
News, Kingston was remanded to the Federal Detention Center in Miami on April
10, 2025, after his legal team confirmed he could not meet the bond
requirements, which also included a $500,000 personal surety bond backed by real
estate assets. Despite efforts to gather funds from family and unnamed
celebrity friends, Kingston was unable to raise the necessary cash, leading to
his detention until his sentencing on July 11, 2025. However, TMZ and Rolling
Stone reported late on April 15 that Kingston managed to post the $100,000 bond
and was in the process of being released back to house arrest with electronic
monitoring, though he must surrender his passport.
The fraud scheme, which ran from
April 2023 to March 2024, involved Kingston leveraging his celebrity status to
deceive vendors into delivering high-end items without payment, using fake wire
transfer receipts. Prosecutors described Kingston and Turner as “masters of
deception,” with evidence including a text from Kingston to his mother
instructing her to create a fake receipt. Turner, labeled the “operator, fixer,
and accountant” of the scheme, remains in custody due to her prior fraud
history and perceived flight risk. Both face up to 20 years in prison per
count, with a total of five counts each for conspiracy to commit wire fraud and
wire fraud.
Kingston’s legal troubles began
with a May 2024 raid on his Florida mansion, leading to his and Turner’s
arrests. The guilty verdict, delivered after just three-and-a-half hours of
jury deliberation on March 28, 2025, left Kingston visibly emotional, reportedly
crying and urging U.S. Marshals to “protect my mother” as she was taken into
custody. Posts on X reflected mixed sentiments.
As Kingston awaits sentencing,
his attorney, Robert Rosenblatt, indicated that staying in jail briefly might
help accrue time served, though Kingston opted against a plea deal despite
counsel’s advice. The case continues to draw attention, highlighting the severe
consequences of the mother-son duo’s elaborate fraud scheme
