Spice and Stonebwoy Share Passionate Views on Music Identity and Cultural Representation
Spice

The vibrant atmosphere at 3Music TV lit up as Jamaican Dancehall queen Spice and Ghanaian superstar Stonebwoy joined forces in a riveting conversation about the evolution of music, cultural representation, and their shared love for Dancehall. The two icons, each celebrated for their global impact, delved into the importance of staying authentic while embracing new trends, sparking a dialogue that resonated deeply with their fans and the music industry.

Spice passionately highlighted Dancehall’s authenticity, emphasizing that its roots are so deeply embedded in Jamaican culture that no external influence could compromise its originality. She added that in Jamaica, 10 out of 10 emerging artistes naturally gravitate towards dancehall, though some infuse contemporary styles like Trap Dancehall—a genre blending Hip-hop’s trap beats with traditional Dancehall rhythms.

"Trap dancehall is trendy," Spice remarked, citing Jamaican stars like Skeng and Skillibeng as pioneers of this evolution. She humorously debated whether the term could extend to Afro dancehall, acknowledging the influence of African elements in the global reinterpretation of the genre.

Stonebwoy, known for seamlessly navigating Reggae, Dancehall, and Afrobeats, echoed Spice’s sentiments but pointed to Ghana’s unique challenges. He explained that Ghana’s vast cultural diversity, with its multitude of languages and traditional sounds, shapes artistes’ creative paths in distinct ways. "Genres of music were created by labels, not creators," Stonebwoy declared. "As a creative, I make what I feel spiritually inclined to make."

Stonebwoy emphasized the importance of investing resources into Ghanaian music, referencing his historic 40,000-capacity stadium concert, an entirely self-funded event that showcased his dedication to elevating the country’s music scene. "We’re not culture vultures; we’re culture custodians," he asserted, underscoring his commitment to preserving and advancing Ghana’s musical identity.

The conversation also touched on the question of whether Ghana’s embrace of multiple genres dilutes its music identity. Spice credited Jamaica’s success in maintaining a unified musical identity to its cultural cohesion, where Reggae and Dancehall are synonymous with national pride. Meanwhile, Stonebwoy argued that Ghana’s diversity is its strength, as artistes naturally draw from their regional influences to create distinctive sounds.

"Ghana’s complexity lies in its richness," Stonebwoy stated. "Someone from the north brings a different flavor to dancehall than someone from the south. That diversity is what makes our music unique."

Both artistes concluded the discussion by championing the need to focus on cultural authenticity and financial investment in music. Spice applauded Stonebwoy’s efforts to amplify Ghanaian dancehall globally, noting that his work inspired her to connect more deeply with the Ghanaian music scene.

"There’s something special about Ghana," Spice said. "Stonebwoy’s dedication shows that Dancehall isn’t just Jamaica’s story—it’s a global movement."

Their conversation, brimming with passion and mutual respect, serves as proof of the universal power of music and its ability to bridge cultures. Through platforms like 3Music TV, these artistes continue to inspire meaningful dialogue and elevate the legacy of their genres on a global stage.
