Superman Becomes the Highest-Grossing Superman Film Ever in the U.S.

James Gunn’s Superman has soared past the $331 million mark at the U.S. box office, officially becoming the highest-grossing solo Superman film in U.S. history, surpassing both Man of Steel (2013) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016).

According to Box Office records, Man of Steel previously held the domestic solo Superman record with approximately $291 million. While Superman now leads in unadjusted dollars, inflation-adjusted figures from Man of Steel would translate to around $407 million today, meaning it technically remains the stronger performer when adjusted.

Worldwide, Superman has collected approximately $579 million as of August 10, 2025. This puts it behind Man of Steel’s global haul ($670 million), but solidly above other franchise entries like Superman Returns ($391 million).

Director James Gunn has strongly denied media reports claiming the film needs $650–700 million to break even, calling such figures “absolutely false”, a narrative he dismissed as economically flawed and implausible.

Alongside the box office success, Superman stands as a cultural milestone. It marks the strongest solo opening for a Superman film, reflects sustained audience enthusiasm, and offers a rejuvenated creative direction for the DC Universe as envisioned under Gunn and DC Studios.
