Ghanaian international Thomas Partey has officially agreed to a two‑year contract with Villarreal CF, signalling his return to La Liga through to summer 2027.
Aged 32, Partey became a free agent after his contract with Arsenal expired on June 30th, 2025. He has now completed a medical examination and will be unveiled as a key midfield reinforcement for Villarreal, a club preparing for the 2025‑26 UEFA Champions League campaign.
This move represents a full-circle moment for Partey, who initially rose to prominence in Spain with Atlético Madrid, after loan spells at Mallorca and Almería. His return to La Liga is seen as both a strategic and emotional homecoming.
Partey’s debut phase at Villarreal coincides with a significant legal controversy. In July 2025, he was formally charged with five counts of rape and one of sexual assault, connected to alleged incidents involving three women between 2021 and 2022. He denies all charges and is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on August 5th, 2025.
Several news outlets note that Villarreal structured the contract with caution: one source indicates an initial one‑year term with an option to extend, likely contingent on legal developments and Partey’s on‑field performance.
