A new chapter has begun for the Roman Catholic Church as Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, O.S.A., has been elected as the 267th pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. His election was announced today following the traditional appearance of white smoke from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, signaling a successful result from the papal conclave.
The historic announcement came just over two weeks after the death of Pope Francis on April 2st, 2025, at the age of 88. In accordance with Vatican protocol, 133 cardinal electors gathered for a conclave that commenced on May 7. After several rounds of secret ballot voting, the required two-thirds majority, at least 89 votes was reached on the second day of deliberations.
As the white smoke billowed over St. Peter’s Square, thousands of faithful and pilgrims erupted in celebration. Church bells rang out as anticipation built for the formal Latin announcement from the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica: “Habemus Papam”—“We have a pope.” Moments later, Pope Leo XIV emerged onto the balcony, offering his first public blessing as pontiff.
Cardinal Robert Prevost, 69, hails from Chicago, Illinois. A member of the Order of Saint Augustine (O.S.A.), he brings a blend of American roots, Latin American pastoral experience, and global church governance to his new role. Fluent in English and Spanish, he has served extensively in Peru, where he was bishop of Chiclayo and later appointed by Pope Francis to lead the Vatican’s Dicastery for Bishops.
Prevost is known for his deep theological knowledge, commitment to missionary work, and advocacy for pastoral care. His election reflects a desire for continuity with the inclusive, reform-minded approach of his predecessor, while also bringing renewed focus to the global south, where Catholicism continues to grow.
Pope Leo XIV assumes leadership of a global Church facing a wide array of challenges including increasing secularization in the West, calls for greater accountability in addressing sexual abuse scandals, and ongoing debates over doctrinal reform and inclusivity. His pastoral background in Latin America and governance experience in Rome suggest he may strive to bridge divides between the traditional and progressive wings of the Church.
As Catholics around the world welcome their new spiritual leader, all eyes will be on how Pope Leo XIV navigates the evolving spiritual and social landscape of the 21st century.
