At the 3Media Women’s Brunch, business leader, Yvonne Ocloo, delivered a bold and thought-provoking message, urging women to focus less on appearances and more on substance, discipline and continuous growth.
Building on earlier conversations around independence and self-worth, Yvonne addressed a common reality in today’s world where image and aesthetics often take centre stage, especially on social media.
“You can’t write ‘pretty’ on a cheque and cash it at the bank,” she stated firmly, drawing attention to the limits of surface-level validation.
While acknowledging that appearance may open doors temporarily, she emphasised that it is substance, skills, knowledge and value that sustain long-term success.
“It may look good for a few days… but after that, you’re history,” she added.
Her message was clear: women must invest in who they are beyond what is seen. She challenged the audience to reflect deeply on their identity, their capabilities and what they truly bring to the table.
“Who are you? What’s your substance? What do you have going for yourself?” she asked.
Yvonne also spoke candidly about her personal work ethic, revealing that opportunities do not make her comfortable they challenge her. For her, every opportunity comes with a responsibility to prove that the trust placed in her is justified.
“When you give me an opportunity, you’ve worried me,” she admitted. “Because now I have to prove you right.”
In a striking departure from popular motivational rhetoric, she questioned the widely used phrase “you deserve it,” explaining that she does not subscribe to the idea of entitlement.
“I don’t understand what ‘you deserve it’ means,” she said. “For every one of me, there are 10, 20, 50 others who could have been chosen.”
Instead, she believes success is earned through consistent effort, learning and persistence not assumed.
“We don’t deserve anything. We are constantly working for something,” she emphasised.
Her perspective reframed success as a continuous journey rather than a reward owed. She encouraged women to remain hungry to keep learning, growing and pushing themselves, regardless of their stage in life or career.
Referencing insights shared earlier at the brunch, she highlighted how even those in later stages of life continue to evolve, reinforcing the idea that growth never stops.
Yvonne also cautioned against complacency and ego, particularly in professional spaces. She encouraged women to be curious, ask questions and seek understanding rather than making assumptions.
“If you don’t understand something, ask,” she advised. “Don’t walk away assuming everything is about you.”
Her message was both grounding and empowering. A reminder that real success is built on substance, humility and hard work.
In a world that often celebrates quick wins and surface-level validation, Yvonne Ocloo’s words cut through the noise, leaving the audience with a powerful takeaway: stay hungry, stay learning and never stop earning your place.
