Akwaboah claims that Black Sherif's music is mistakenly labeled as Hip hop or Afrobeats. “I will describe most of the songs Black Sherif does as Highlife,” Akwaboah told Kojo Yankson on the Super Morning Show.
The Obiaa hitmaker further elaborated saying, "When you listen to how Black Sherif sings and everything, it's clear he's a Highlife musician, but he's been pushed to Hiphop."
Akwaboah asserts that if Black Sherif is labeled as a Highlife musician, he will be able to carry the renowned Ghanaian genre on his ascension. Quoting the award-winning Highlife vocalist and record producer, “So going global, imagine calling what he is doing Highlife, that would have been Highlife on the map but in a way, it appears we are pushing him into Hip hop or Afrobeats. Now what's happening is that he's out there, but they are calling it Hip hop or Afrobeats."
Black Sherif undoubtedly said that he writes his music from a Highlife perspective with Reggae having a big impact on him as well. These inspirations stem from music he heard being played by his father as a child.
Akwaboah's most recent release is titled Darling, featuring Kwabena Kwabena, who recently aired similar views on Sherif.
