Ghanaian personalities who were nominated in various categories for the Ninth Edition of the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards were not pronounced as winners in their respective categories. History has repeated itself as during the 3rd Edition of the AMVCA, none of the Ghanaian nominees received an award the during the event. In 2015, movies like A Letter From Adam, Devil In The Detail and Love Or Something Like That were included in the nomination list.
The Ninth edition for the awards program was held on 20th May 2023 in Lagos, Nigeria. This had movie personalities from Ghana, Nigeria, Zambia and many others across the continent of Africa in attendance.
Among the twelve categories presented by AMVCA, four categories were to the credit of Ghana. Shirley Frimpong Manso's Dede was nominated in the category of Best Original Telenovela alongside nine other movies produced across Africa. However, the Akwaaba Magic's Dede lost to Zambia's Mpali.
Co Habits, televised on Akwaaba Magic was the only Ghanaian comedy series nominated in the Best Original Comedy Series Category. The series which stars, media personality, Caroline Sampson, also lost to Njoro Wa Uba television series produced in Kenya.
In terms of drama series, Ghanaian series, To Have and to Hold and Accra Medic were among the nomination list in the Best Original Drama Series Category. However, Nigerian TV series, Ricordi won over To Have and To Hold produced by Ivan Quashigah and Accra Medic produced by Revele Production.
Rock that Aisle Again and Sankofa from Ghana were also nominated in the category of Best Unscripted Original. These two programmes showed on Akwaaba Magic were defeated by King Bugar, an unscripted show produced in Zambia. King Bugar chronicles how Zambian music artist Macky2 lives his life.
On the contrary, over the years some Ghanaian actors and movies have received various awards in various categories AMVCA.
Disappointedly, none of the Ghanaian movies including actors, actresses, producers and directors emerged as winners at the 9th Edition of the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards.
