In a recent update, Google Maps has renamed the GULF OF MEXICO to the GULF OF AMERICA for users in the United States, following an executive order by President Donald Trump. This change aligns with Google’s policy of updating names based on official government sources.
For users outside the U.S., the map reflects the name as the Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America). Google determines which name to display based on user location data from their mobile OS, SIM, network, or desktop search settings.
President Trump’s executive order also aimed to rename North America’s highest peak from Denali back to Mount McKinley, although this change has yet to be reflected on Google Maps. Former President Barack Obama had renamed the mountain Denali in 2015 to honor native Alaskan groups.
Despite the changes in the U.S., Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has asserted that the name Gulf of Mexico remains unchanged globally.
The renaming of these geographical features has sparked discussions about the significance of place names and their cultural implications.
