MoH Warns Of Cholera Outbreak As Floods Kick In

The Ministry of Health has warned of possible cholera outbreak following recent floods in parts on the country. 

The Ministry cautioned that indiscriminate sanitation habits during rainy seasons could lead to the outbreak of waterborne diseases in communities. 

In an interview on Monday, June 29, 2026, spokesperson for the ministry Tony Goodman said that authorities had already commenced public education campaigns prior to the rains, saying that flooding incidents create a conducive environment for the transmission of cholera if proper hygiene is not maintained. 

Mr. Goodman noted that some locals still discard rubbish into water bodies during floods, describing it as dangerous and a major cause of disease outbreaks.

“We need to stop throwing garbage into our water bodies. But whenever there is a flood, that is when people think they can empty their dustbins and the rest,” he added.

As part of emergency preparedness efforts, the spokesperson said the Ghana Health Service has also started monitoring early symptoms or cholera at the district level. 

“We prepare for it. If it’s a wet season, rainy season, we prepare for cholera. We are endemic,” he stated.

As flooding continues in several areas of the nation, the Ministry says it is stepping up its public health campaign.
