BET Awards Honours Lauryn Hill With Living Legend Icon Award

US rap Icon Ms. Lauryn Hill was honoured at the 2026 BET Awards with the first-ever Living Legend Icon Award after she made a surprise performance at the ceremony in Los Angeles. 


The performance was a star-studded tribute featuring Doechii, SZA, Lizzo, Doja Cat, Queen Latifah, Nas and Common. 


The adored vocalist, 51, released her groundbreaking album after becoming well-known as a member of The Fugees.


Lauryn's first and only studio album, The Miseducation, was released in 1998.


Speaking to her fans, she said "We hold different gifts. Fashion could be a gift from someone else. It may be hair. Perhaps comforting someone. This microphone could be the cause.


"But that gifting is very important because somebody out there needs your gift. So don't sell your gift short."
