A technology expert, Selasie Vondee is urging smartphone users to pay closer attention to the permissions they grant mobile applications, warning that many apps collect far more personal information than users realise.

Speaking on the Big Convo segment of the Culture Daily morning show on 3Music TV and Pluzz 89.9 FM, the chief technology officer of Smart Innovations Ghana said most smartphones continuously generate valuable user data through location services, browsing history, and app activity.

He explained that while many people worry about phones secretly listening to conversations, much of the information companies use comes from data users willingly provide through their devices.

“The short answer is yes and no at the same time,” he said when asked whether smartphones spy on users.

According to him, smartphones contain several sensors and inputs, including microphones that remain active to detect voice assistants such as Siri or Google Assistant.

However, he said companies often rely more heavily on browsing habits, location history and behavioural data than on recorded conversations.

“They have much more information about you than just listening to your conversations,” he said.

Vondee explained that when users install applications, many request access to features such as cameras, microphones or location services. While some permissions are necessary for apps to function properly, others may not be.

He cited ride-hailing services as an example of applications that genuinely require location access, but questioned why some unrelated apps seek the same information.

“If you feel the app does not really need that functionality, you just have to cancel it,” he advised.

He said app developers are required by platforms such as Apple’s App Store and Google Play to justify the types of user data they collect, adding that users should take time to read privacy policies and terms of service before accepting permissions.

Although he acknowledged that many people skip these documents, he said they provide important information about how personal data will be used.

Vondee also explained that data collected from different applications is often combined to build detailed user profiles.

He said location information, browsing history and social connections can all be used to predict user interests, making targeted advertising more accurate.

During the programme, he demonstrated how users can review privacy settings on both iPhones and Android devices by checking permissions for location services, app tracking, cameras, microphones and Bluetooth access.

He advised users to change location permissions from “Always” to “While Using the App” wherever continuous tracking is unnecessary.

He also encouraged users to regularly audit microphone permissions, noting that some applications may retain access even when users no longer need voice features.

“This is for information purposes,” he said, cautioning users to understand the implications before changing device settings.

Vondee said improving digital privacy begins with greater awareness of how smartphones collect and share information.

“Our security is in our hands,” he said, encouraging users to take control of the permissions granted on their devices.
