Saudi Arabia's Health Minister, Fahd bin Abdurrahman Al-Jalajel, has announced that a staggering 1,301 pilgrims lost their lives during this year's Hajj pilgrimage, with extreme heat being a major factor. The majority of the deceased (83%) were unauthorized pilgrims who braved the scorching temperatures, reaching up to 120°F (49°C), while walking long distances. Many victims remained unidentified, leading to delayed identification and burial in Mecca.
The fatalities included pilgrims from various countries, including Indonesia, India, Jordan, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Malaysia, and two U.S. citizens. Egyptian authorities revoked the licenses of 16 travel agencies for illegally facilitating unauthorized pilgrimages.
This year's Hajj, which drew over 1.83 million Muslims, saw an unusually high death toll, posing significant challenges to Saudi Arabia's efforts to ensure safety. Climate change may exacerbate these challenges in the future. The incident highlights the need for enhanced safety measures and responsible travel practices to prevent such tragedies during future religious gatherings.
