The National Peace Council has called for calm and restraint following what it described as rising political tensions linked to the recent arrests of some political actors over comments they allegedly made.
In a statement issued on May 20, the Council said it was “deeply concerned” about developments surrounding the arrests and warned against actions and comments that could threaten national cohesion and stability.
The Council reminded Ghanaians that the rule of law, due process, and respect for constitutional rights under the 1992 Constitution remain “non-negotiable pillars” of the country’s democracy.
It also urged moderation, circumspection, and tolerance among political actors, media practitioners, and members of the public.
The Peace Council called on security and judicial institutions to act with impartiality, transparency, and professionalism while ensuring that the rights and freedoms of citizens are protected in the performance of their duties.
At the same time, it appealed to political parties, communicators, and political actors to avoid unsubstantiated and inflammatory statements that could incite violence.
The Council further cautioned political commentators both within and outside Ghana to be mindful of their public utterances and their potential impact on national stability.
“The NPC reiterate the fact that Ghana’s stability depends on our ability to disagree in our public discourse without resorting to abusive language or violence,” the statement said.
The Council said it would, in the coming days, hold a meeting with the leadership of political parties as part of its quarterly trust-building platform to discuss measures aimed at preventing further escalation of tensions.
