Accra Calls For Noah’s Ark As Devastating Floods Submerge The City
Floods in Accra

On the morning of Monday, June 29, 2026, heavy rains that began late Sunday evening pounded Accra and surrounding areas, triggering widespread flooding that disrupted lives, stranded commuters, and submerged homes and roads across the capital.

The downpour continued into the early hours of Monday, and familiar scenes of Ghana's rainy season nightmare unfolded once more.

Streets have turned into raging rivers, vehicles swept away or abandoned, and desperate residents are seeking higher ground.

Social media and local news outlets have reported horrifying flood scenes and eyewitnesses describing the intensity of the rain and its effects.

In the suburbs Mallam and Weija, floodwaters made their way through communities, with residents crying out for help as the waters dragged belongings and debris along their path.

One video captured the chaos as waters carried a shipping container in parts of the city.

In Achimota Mile 7, the situation turned dire as some residents climbed onto their rooftops for safety, with reports of unanswered calls to emergency services amplifying the sense of isolation and urgency.

The Pokuase-Achimota highway stood heavily flooded, a stretch that has repeatedly proven treacherous in such downpours.

Sections of the N1 Highway, Apenkwa towards Tesano, the Accra–Kasoa stretch, Spintex, Atomic in Madina, Kaneshie, Darkuman Junction, and portions of the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange all reported severe inundation.

Workers and commuters faced gridlock during the Monday morning rush, with many forced to stay home and others forcing their way through the waters.

Communities in lowlands have had their homes and shops submerged as families hurriedly pull their belongings out to safety.

The Ghana National Fire Service deployed rescue teams across Accra, Tema, and Kasoa in response to the crisis. Videos showed firefighters navigating the floodwaters amid the ongoing emergency.

This morning's floods are the latest chapter in Accra's recurring battle with heavy rains.

Poor drainage systems, choked gutters from indiscriminate waste disposal, rapid urbanization, and the loss of wetlands and retention ponds have been repeatedly cited by officials, engineers, and residents as key contributors.

As one blogger reflected in earlier similar events this year, it remains heartbreaking that in 2026, flooding continues to bring anxiety rather than relief with every major downpour.

As the waters recede and the cleanup begins, Ghanaians across the capital are once again reminded of nature's power and the human factors that turn rain into devastation.
