British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua has reportedly been injured in a car crash in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two other individuals, according to early reports from local media.

The accident occurred on Tuesday morning as Joshua was travelling along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, one of Nigeria’s busiest and most accident-prone highways. The boxer was said to be seated in the back of a Lexus vehicle at the time of the crash. Details surrounding the cause of the incident remain unclear.

The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, which connects Lagos, Nigeria’s largest city, to Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, spans approximately 127 kilometres (79 miles). The road is notorious for heavy traffic, poor visibility in some sections, and frequent accidents. Traffic volumes typically surge during the festive season, as many Nigerians in the diaspora return home to celebrate with family.

Joshua’s involvement in the crash comes shortly after his high-profile return to the ring on 19 December, where he secured a heavyweight victory over YouTube star-turned-boxer Jake Paul in Miami. The six-round bout marked Joshua’s first fight since his defeat to Daniel Dubois in September 2024. During the contest, Joshua reportedly broke Paul’s jaw in two places.

The fight was one of the most lucrative events in boxing this year, with Joshua believed to have earned a share of a reported £210 million purse.

As of the time of filing this report, no official statement has been released by Joshua’s management team regarding the extent of his injuries. Authorities are also yet to confirm the identities of the deceased or provide further details about the circumstances of the crash.
