Ghana's hopes of extending their FIFA World Cup campaign came to an end after a disciplined Colombia side secured a 1-0 victory in their Round of 32 encounter at Kansas City Stadium on Friday.
Jhon Arias scored the only goal of the match in the 14th minute, finishing calmly at the back post after substitute Luis Suarez delivered a precise cross following an early injury to Colombian striker Jhon Cordoba.
The goal proved enough to send the South Americans into the Round of 16, where they will face Switzerland.
The defeat ended Ghana's first appearance in the World Cup knockout stage since 2010, despite a spirited effort from the Black Stars in the closing stages.
Both teams were forced into early changes after injuries disrupted their plans. Colombia lost Cordoba after only eight minutes with an apparent groin problem, while Ghana right-back Marvin Senaya was substituted five minutes later after suffering a hamstring injury.
Colombia settled more quickly after the interruptions. Luis Suarez, introduced much earlier than expected, made an immediate impact by delivering an inviting cross that Arias converted from close range after finding space behind Ghana's defence.
The South Americans controlled much of the possession afterwards and repeatedly tested Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi, who produced several important saves to prevent the scoreline from becoming more emphatic.
Luis Diaz also had a second-half goal ruled out for offside after briefly believing he had doubled Colombia's advantage.
Although Ghana improved after the break and pushed more players forward, clear-cut chances remained scarce against Colombia's organised defence.
Antoine Semenyo was Ghana's most dangerous attacking player but struggled to find space as Colombia defended their lead with discipline.
Speaking after the match, Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz acknowledged that Colombia deserved the victory.
"We tried to go forward, tried to create opportunities, but for any reason, the last pass, the last service, was not with the quality that was necessary in this case. So, I think the best team won," he said.
Queiroz later said his team's exit reflected their lack of experience in handling crucial moments at the highest level.
According to the Portuguese coach, Ghana struggled to remain composed under pressure against one of the tournament's most consistent teams.
"Our lack of maturity" and inability to stay calm proved costly, he said after the defeat.
Colombia coach Nestor Lorenzo praised his side's defensive discipline after protecting their narrow advantage throughout the second half.
"After creating several chances and not converting, I liked how we defended. I value the fact that we did not suffer much, apart from the opponent's clear chances," Lorenzo said.
The victory extended Colombia's unbeaten run in the tournament after they topped Group K ahead of Portugal, DR Congo and Uzbekistan before overcoming Ghana in the knockout stage.
Their reward is a Round of 16 meeting with Switzerland in Vancouver.
