Ghana's FIFA World Cup campaign has come to an end after a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32, bringing the curtain down on a tournament that saw the Black Stars overcome difficult moments to reach the knockout stage.
Jhon Arias scored the only goal of the match in the 14th minute at Kansas City Stadium, sending Colombia into the last 16 and ending Ghana's hopes of progressing further.
Despite the defeat, the Black Stars leave the tournament with encouraging performances that restored confidence after years of mixed results on the international stage.
Colombia controlled much of the game before holding on to secure a narrow victory.
Ghana arrived at the tournament knowing they faced a difficult challenge in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.
The Black Stars made a dream start by beating Panama 1-0 in their opening match.
Just when the game looked set to end in a draw, Caleb Yirenkyi scored deep into stoppage time to hand Ghana all three points.
The victory gave Ghana an early boost and put the team in a strong position before facing two of the group's strongest opponents.
Ghana then produced one of their most disciplined performances of the tournament against England.
England enjoyed more possession and created several chances, but Ghana defended well and frustrated the European side throughout the match.
Harry Kane came closest to breaking the deadlock when he blasted the ball over the crossbar late in the game, but the Black Stars held on for a goalless draw.
The result earned Ghana a valuable point and kept qualification within reach heading into the final group match.
The decisive group game came against Croatia.
Croatia won 2-1, but Ghana's earlier results proved enough to keep their World Cup dream alive.
The Black Stars finished third in Group L and qualified for the Round of 32 as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams under the expanded 48-team format.
It was a significant achievement for a side that many had tipped to struggle in one of the tournament's toughest groups.
That set up a knockout meeting with Colombia, who had finished top of Group K after an unbeaten group-stage campaign.
The match started badly for Ghana when Colombia took the lead after only 14 minutes. Luis Suarez, who had come on early after an injury to Jhon Cordoba, crossed for Jhon Arias to score from close range.
Ghana tried to respond but found it difficult to create clear chances against a well-organised Colombian defence.
Goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi made several important saves to keep the Black Stars in the contest, while Luis Diaz had a second Colombian goal ruled out for offside.
Despite improving after the break, Ghana could not find the equaliser and Colombia held on to secure victory.
After the match, Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz admitted Colombia deserved to go through.
Queiroz also said his players must learn from the experience if they are to compete consistently against the world's best teams. He said Ghana lacked the maturity needed to deal with key moments in such an important match.
Although Ghana's World Cup journey has ended, the tournament offered several positives. The Black Stars opened with a dramatic win over Panama, earned a hard-fought draw against England and recovered from defeat to Croatia to reach the knockout stage.
Their campaign ended against a strong Colombian side, but the performances showed a team capable of competing at the highest level.
With a blend of experienced players and emerging talent, Ghana will hope to build on the lessons from this tournament as attention turns to future international competitions.
