As anticipation builds for the release of his forthcoming album UPPER ECHELONS, celebrated music producer, Hammer of The Last Two, has opened up about the creative philosophy guiding the project, stressing the importance of authentic collaboration, artistic integrity, and producer visibility in today’s music landscape.
Hammer addressed the modern trend of virtual beat exchanges, asserting that true production requires hands-on creative partnership.
“If you only send beats, you are not producing… You are simply making beats,” he stated firmly.
He explained that nearly all the artistes featured on UPPER ECHELONS visited his studio to craft their verses together, ensuring proper direction and synergy. For performers outside Ghana, sessions were conducted via real-time video calls under his supervision, a non-negotiable part of his process.
The producer acknowledged the evolving expectations in today’s music culture, where producers are increasingly required to be visible, active and engaging personalities especially on platforms like TikTok.
Hammer noted that while it was not the norm during his earlier years in the industry, he is ready to embrace the promotional responsibilities that come with being the face of a major project in 2025.
While a few emerging talents appear on the album, Hammer clarified that the project is not meant to introduce new artistes to the industry.
“The album mainly focuses on established acts. A few new voices appear because they fit the spirit of the project but this is not a discovery compilation,” he explained.
He described the body of work as a celebration of elite performers who represent the best of Ghanaian artistry today.
Addressing fan concerns about the absence of his signature “Last Two” producer tag on the latest release, Hammer clarified that the tag was never mandatory.
Hammer also touched on the long-standing public desire for a joint album with multiple award-winning rapper Sarkodie.
While he admitted such a project would be difficult due to Sarkodie’s demanding schedule, Hammer emphasised their strong creative relationship.
Hammer confirmed that a second single from UPPER ECHELONS is ready and awaiting clearance from distributors. Beyond that, he teased “major surprises” on the album, although he withheld details for now.
