Legendary Ghanaian guitarist, composer and band leader Ebo Taylor has died at the age of 90, his family has announced, bringing to a close the life of one of the most influential figures in African music history.
Born Deroy Taylor in Cape Coast in 1936, Ebo Taylor rose to prominence in the late 1950s and early 1960s, a period when highlife music emerged as Ghana’s dominant sound. His work during this era helped shape the genre and laid the foundation for musical movements that would later gain global recognition.
Taylor performed with some of the most important bands of the time, including The Stargazers and the Broadway Dance Band, earning widespread respect for his distinctive guitar style, sophisticated arrangements and deep musical knowledge. Over a career spanning more than six decades, he blended traditional Ghanaian rhythms with jazz, funk, soul and early Afrobeat, influencing generations of musicians across Africa and beyond.
A defining moment in Taylor’s musical journey came in the early 1960s when he travelled to London to study music. During this period, he worked closely with other African musicians in the diaspora, including Nigerian icon Fela Kuti. Their collaborations are now seen as part of a crucial exchange of ideas that helped shape Afrobeat, with highlife playing a central role in its musical roots.
After returning to Ghana, Ebo Taylor became one of the country’s most sought-after band leaders, arrangers and producers, working with renowned artistes such as Pat Thomas and CK Mann. His influence extended far beyond performance, as he played a key role in refining the sound and structure of modern highlife music.
In the last 25 years of his life, Taylor’s music enjoyed a global revival, as international audiences rediscovered his work through reissues and popular tracks like LOVE & DEATH, a reflective piece exploring themes of relationships and mortality. This resurgence introduced his music to a new generation of fans worldwide.
Ebo Taylor’s passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy lives on through the countless artistes he inspired and the timeless music that continues to shape African and global soundscapes.
