Jacinta Ocansey Acknowledges Ghanaians’ Awakened Value For Comedy

In a recent interview with BBC News Pidgin, Nigerian-Ghanaian comedian and actress Jacinta Ocansey opened up about how society’s perception of comedy has changed over the years especially in Ghana.

According to Jacinta, there was a time when telling people you were a comedian attracted little respect. “If you say you be comedian, dem go look you like you be one useless pesin,” she said, reflecting on the early days of her career. Comedy was often seen as a side hustle, not a serious profession. Many viewed it as a fallback option rather than a legitimate craft that required talent, discipline and strategy.

However, that narrative is gradually shifting.

Today, comedians are commanding stages, filling auditoriums, signing brand deals and building strong online communities. In Ghana particularly, there is a growing appreciation for the value comedians bring, not just as entertainers but as social commentators. Through humor, they address politics, relationships, economic hardship and everyday struggles in ways that resonate deeply with audiences.

Jacinta noted that Ghanaians are beginning to recognize that comedy is serious business. “Now pipo dey put respect on di job,” she emphasized. The rise of stand-up specials, comedy tours and digital content platforms has contributed to this new level of recognition. Social media has also played a key role, allowing comedians to reach wider audiences without relying solely on traditional media.

Beyond the applause and laughter, comedy has become a coping mechanism in challenging times. With economic pressures and social issues affecting many citizens, humor provides relief. As Jacinta pointed out, people are starting to understand that comedians help society process its problems.

The shift in perception marks an important cultural evolution. Where comedians were once dismissed, they are now celebrated as creative entrepreneurs and influential voices. Ghana’s entertainment industry continues to expand and comedy is carving out its own respected space within it.

Jacinta’s reflections highlight a broader truth, creative careers, once undervalued, are increasingly being recognized for their impact and economic potential. And as audiences continue to show up and support local talent, the respect for comedians is only set to grow.
