The South African music industry has suffered a great loss with the confirmed death of rapper Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes in a drive-by shooting that took place on Friday night.
This comes after a tweet went viral that the rapper had been shot.
AKA was reportedly standing outside of the Wish Restaurant in Durban when he was shot and killed. Another person, believed to be his bodyguard, was also wounded in the attack.
Sources confirm that two unknown cars opened fire just before 10pm, resulting in the tragic death of the popular musician. The motives behind the murders are currently being investigated by the police.
Patrons at a nearby restaurant spoke of their shock and disbelief at the events that took place. AKA was expected to perform at a Durban nightclub, YUGO, as part of his birthday celebrations
.AKA’s close friend and fellow rapper, Da Les, took to social media to express his shock and condolences. The South African music community is mourning the loss of one of their own and paying tribute to the late rapper’s contributions to the industry.
AKA is among SA's best rappers and has produced and written many hit songs including Fela In Versace, Baddest and others since he broke into the industry over a decade ago.
He shares a daughter, Kairo, with DJ Zinhle and was in a relationship with rapper Nadia Nakai.
The music world has lost a talented artist, and our thoughts and prayers go out to AKA’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
